We had an interesting conversation and interview with Zziggy, a Kenyan musician, songwriter and performing artist currently based in Doha, Qatar. Zziggy shares his musical journey and experiences being in the music industry for more than 10 years. This what Ziggy had to say.
- Can you share your journey into music writing and how it led to the establishment of your unique gospel sound ? I started to sing when I was in primary school, I used to sing to songs by Daudi Kabaka, Oliver Mtukudzi, E-Sir, Nameless, Daddy Owen, Esther Wahome etc. When in high school I started doing my own freestyle songs, my school mates used to cheer me up. When I record a song, I used to perform in school extravaganza and and during games competitions.
- What do you consider to be your most significant or personally fulfilling project as an artist so far? I like speaking much via my music its where I can pour my thoughts and feelings on . I believe I can make changes via my music
- How do you approach the creative process when working on a new track, and what inspires your musical choices? I want to archive my goals which is edutainment day today activities is my music.
- Can you highlight some of the unique features that sets your gospel apart in the Kenyan music industry? Am not only a gospel artist I want my songs to reach out to everyone listening to my music . I listen much Kirk Franklin music, Burna Boy, Diamond Platnumz, Maître Gims, Jay-Z and the list is long to put it out now.
- Which artists have you enjoyed collaborating with the most, and what makes those collaborations special to you? Every time I am doing a collabo with any artist, I feel great. I did a collabo song with Talal, an artist from Qatar. Even though we did not shoot an official video, the song “Goodie Goodie” performances on big stage in Qatar the feeling was great.
- In your opinion, how has the Kenyan gospel music evolved over the years, and how have you contributed to this evolution? I have been silent for long after the break. Now I feel it’s high time to change some few things in gospel music and all music in general.
- Are there any challenges you’ve faced in the music industry, and how have they shaped your approach to music production and studio management? Currently I can say lack of funds; I do things on my own, no manager, studio productions and video its all from my pocket. If I can find someone who can sponsor me I can do big this. I am living now in Qatar this is an Arab country so time for studios its a bit tricky for me but I try all means.
- Could you share a memorable success story from an artist who you have worked with? When I did a collabo with internal artist from Qatar, Talal.
- What role do you believe producers play in shaping the overall sound and direction of the Kenyan music scene? Their role is to make good sound of an artist by using quality instrumental and effects in recording an artist. But I believe good music comes from chemistry of an artist and producer while recording a music.
- How do you stay innovative and keep up with industry trends in your productions while maintaining your unique style? Every time I try my best on next projects to work on my fans what they want to hear from me. I learn from my fellow artists styles and my own style for better tomorrow music.
- Can you describe the atmosphere or ethos you aim to create within gospel Studios to enhance creativity and collaboration? I am a welcoming person humbled and humorous. I can work with anybody who love good music.
- Are there any specific genres or musical elements that you are particularly drawn to when producing your music? I am a versatile artist I can do any kind of good music.
- How do you balance the business side of music and same time growing your passion for creating music? Music is my passion but need a lot of investment. So music and business are sync. For example, I got to see my portfolio growing as well as my pocket growing.
- In your opinion, what impact does gospel music have on Kenyan culture, and how do you strive to reflect that in your productions? To win souls to Christ. I feel that there is a gap I need to get in to cover with music.
- Beyond your role as an artist, do you engage in any community initiatives or projects to support local talent? Currently am working on with charity for children homes back in Kenya while I am here in Doha. When I come back home that’s what I want deeply get involved into it.
- Looking into the future, are there any upcoming projects or collaborations that you’re particularly excited about? There soo many projects pending with artist worldwide and artists from home Kenya.
- As someone deeply involved in the industry, what changes or improvements would you like to see in the Kenyan gospel and East Africa music scene? feel like music industry has concentrated so much in big artists and show biz thus making it hard for upcoming artist voice to be heard and they have good music. In short airplay is minimal for upcoming artists.
- How do you foster a collaborative and supportive environment within your production house, both for your team and the artists you work with? I respect and support the supportive parties with same spirt for hard work. (Yaani watu wanajituma kama mimi).
- What advice would you give to aspiring producers or musicians looking to make a mark in the Kenyan music industry?For aspiring music producers, it’s good to work hard, harder and always pray.
- Aside from music, what are some of your personal interests or hobbies that fans might find interesting? I would like to go back and do fashions designer as a career. I like travelling swimming reading and eating
