Kenyan social entrepreneur Nelly Cheboi, also known as Kosi, has been named CNN Hero of the Year for her work at Techlit Africa. Techlit Africa is an American non-profit organization that was formed in 2016 by Nelly Cheboi and Tyler Cinnamon to help underprivileged schoolchildren build labs and donate computers.
Nelly Cheboi and Tyler Cinnamon quit well-paying jobs and relocated to Kenya, where they have served more than 10 schools. Equipping them with skills such as coding, digital marketing, touch typing, graphic design, and other valuable skills. These skills will help students create more opportunities and become self-sustaining in the future. She is indeed a hero.
Nelly plans to expand Techlit’s operations so that she can reach more schools. According to CNN, Nelly plans to reach more than 100 schools.
Nelly won the CNN Hero of The Year prize which comes with several benefits which include;
- $100,000 to expand her work
- $10,000 cash award
- $300,000 grant from Elevate Prize, a CNN partner
- $200,000 additional support for her non-profit
